Free For All at St James' School, Preston
Year six pupils at St James’ Primary School in Leyburn, Preston experienced a day of interactive learning with Dan, Lloyd and Mike on 7th March. Working with just one class in their school hall proved really effective. Other year six pupils filled the hall with some interested parents in the afternoon to watch them perform a shortened version of Free For All. Dressed in African material, the children showed the key elements of the Slave Trade including the capturing of Africans, the Middle Passage, life in the Caribbean and the victory in the Commons.
At the end of the performance, the young actors and actresses answered questions on slavery
and helped the audience grasp more of an understanding of why it is important to ask ourselves questions about slavery today. Mike talked briefly about some of the work of CMS in abolishing slavery around the world, and pointed children towards the trax16 podcast to hear more about the tour.
It was great to see some of the children link some of what they had already learnt with new stories of injustice and misused power.
If you were in the performance, or maybe one of those watching – tell us what you thought of it.And check out the photo's in the side bar gallery.
