Free For All this week visited Portsmouth Cathedral and the Isle of Wight. On Wednesday we worked with Charles Dickens school from Portsmouth and Townhill School from Southampton. On a beautiful sunny day the light streamed into the cathedral and lit up the space to give us a naturally lit stage. The children threw themselves into both the workshops and performance and even had time to give a live interview to 106 FM radio station. As you see from the picture there were many potential thespians from both schools, as they re enacted Nelson's last words to Captain Hardy "Kiss me Hardy"
Running through each workshop we try to explore what the characters in the drama are feeling and thinking. As children lay on the floor in the middle passage scene, Dan challenged them to think how they would be feeling. "You are not slaves yet remember" He explained, "You are sons, daughters, Fathers and Mothers, ripped away from your home and family." The silence in this scene was pulpable as children pondered their predicament.
Thank you to Rosemary Fairfax the Cathedral Education officer for faciliting the event this week and to all the schools who took part. Check out the pictures in the photo gallery of our time in the cathedral on Wednesday.
