Children from schools all around Peterborough visited the cathedral from Monday 26th to Thursday 29th March to explore and re-enact some of the history of the slave trade. Becky and Tara took on the roles of William Wilberforce and Lord Tarleton as they battled in the Commons, while well over 100 children portrayed the Battle of Trafalgar with all canons blazing.
An evening performance brought the week to a finale with a large audience witnessing the twists and turns of the life of Susannah – a young Nigerian girl, taken by the cunning English captain, and though she escapes him, her journey to freedom sees hope dashed repeatedly.
A teacher from Eye Primary School commented: “We feel very lucky to have been involved in this piece. Many children have been able to express themselves in ways not always available in the classroom. It has been a great experience watching how ‘actors’ work and the children have learnt a lot – Thank you!”
